Mud, Noise and Cosmic Emptiness: 0N0 Turn Extreme Metal Into an Existential Ritual
Some bands play music. Others create atmosphere. And then there are projects that feel more like a psychological state than a traditional band. Walls of dark sound, crushing slow riffs, industrial coldness and the sensation of drowning in mud while someone flashes a flashlight directly into your face.
The Bratislava-based formation 0N0, moving somewhere between doom metal, death metal, industrial, ambient and experimental music, belongs exactly to that category. All members come from Bratislava, yet their music feels as if it was created outside ordinary reality — somewhere inside abandoned factory ruins, endless cosmic emptiness or deep beneath the surface of the earth.
Their sound is built primarily on raw energy, but also on layers of detail, complexity and constant collisions between different extreme styles. Doom metal blends with death metal, industrial noise, ambient textures and cinematic atmosphere. The result is music that does not feel like a simple collection of songs, but rather a closed world of its own.
0N0 describe their art through images of cosmic voids, flickering fractals, destruction and creation. Their music carries chaos, yet at the same time a strange hypnotic meditation. Listening to it feels like wandering through ruins where something unknown waits behind every corner.
Although their foundation lies in extreme metal, their inspirations stretch far beyond the genre itself. Experimental electronics, alternative music, film soundtracks and unconventional pop play just as important a role as traditional metal influences. Freedom of creation and the rejection of rules remain central to their identity.
That is precisely why 0N0 refuse to make music designed for quick consumption. In an era dominated by playlists and short viral clips, they focus on creating complete albums and EPs that function as immersive atmospheric works. Every detail is shaped through an obsessive process of layering sounds, effects and emotions until the final result feels like a living organism.
Their live performances follow the same philosophy. There is no exaggerated communication with the audience and no theatrical posing. Their concerts resemble introverted rituals — massive walls of sound, pressure, noise and emotion filtered through amplifiers. One of their most memorable moments came during their performance at the Pohoda Festival, where their crushing sound created a fascinating contrast against the environment of a large mainstream event.
The band is currently working on a new album that promises to be doomier, more minimalistic and slightly more accessible than their previous releases. The swamp-like down-tuned riffs, long compositions, noises, screams and industrial textures remain intact. At the same time, the new material is expected to offer more space, slower pacing and even a strange form of dark romance.
0N0 have no intention of standing still. On the contrary, they continue searching for new ways to expand their sound and push the boundaries of their art. Experimentation remains a natural part of their existence.
And that is exactly where their strength lies. 0N0 are not simply another metal band. They are a collective transforming noise into atmosphere, chaos into art and discomfort into their own language.
