Awaken Ashes: Sadness, Anger and the Echo of Gothenburg Sound
As you may know, our project RIFF RIOT ROCKERS BLOG is dedicated to supporting the rock and metal scene beyond the borders of Slovakia. A few days ago, we reached out to a young Swedish band called Awaken Ashes, who are entering the scene with a clear vision: fast, technical, yet melodic music that strikes the listener directly on an emotional level. Their sound is not just about energy — it is a combination of precision, melancholy, and anger that creates an intense experience.
The band themselves describe their sound as "sorrowful yet wrathful" — a contrast that translates to "sad, yet filled with rage." This duality is reflected not only in their songs but also in the overall atmosphere they create. Their music feels like a night storm — dark, emotional, but at the same time powerful and cleansing.
The biggest inspiration for Awaken Ashes is the so-called Gothenburg sound, characteristic of the Swedish melodic death metal scene of the 1990s. One of their main influences is At the Gates. Their impact is especially noticeable in the melodic lines that Awaken Ashes incorporate into their own music. At the same time, they do not forget heavier, groove-oriented elements inspired by bands such as Pantera and Lamb of God, which add necessary aggression to their rhythm section.
Interestingly, the band consciously leans more toward old-school metal from the 1990–2000 era rather than modern trends. They consider this period the golden age of the genre and aim to capture and reinterpret its spirit in their own music.

Their creative process is natural and spontaneous. It is not strictly planned composition — rather a collective flow of energy, where one member brings an idea and the others gradually develop it. This is how the song "The Wastes" was created, whose foundation was laid by the drummer, who played a rhythm inspired by a "caravan groove," later joined by guitars.
If a new listener had to choose one track that best represents Awaken Ashes, the band strongly recommends "Ghosts." This song contains all the key elements of their music — melody, technicality, and emotional intensity.
Their live performances are also a major strength. As they say themselves, they deliver their best performance on stage. Their most intense concert so far took place on March 21 in a small Gothenburg club called Fängelset. The energy between the band and the audience reached its peak, leaving a strong impression on both sides.
Although they are not afraid to experiment within their music, they do not plan to change their core identity. Their goal is to refine what they already do — and do it even better.
Looking ahead, they plan to release an EP and launch their own merchandise, while hoping to perform on bigger stages and play abroad. Their ambitions are clear — and if they maintain their energy and authenticity, Awaken Ashes have the potential to reach a much wider audience.
One thing is certain: their music is not just sound — it is a statement.
